Breeders

The maintenance and productivity of the female herd is the backbone of the breeding operation at Boogalgopal.

FERTILITY and PRODUCTIVITY

Focus at all times is on the fertility of the cow. Despite what the season may bring, our expectations  are that each cow produces a calf and weans that calf within the 12 month period.

All cows are seasonally mated with bulls put out on average for a 12 week period from late Spring and removed mid to late Summer. Calves therefore fall from late August to early December with the majority in September/October. (In seasonally favourable years, an AI programme is run with a selection of 60 or so heifers.)

Cows are preg tested following weaning and  all non-pregnants are culled. The cow is culled for age only when her own health is assessed to be compromised by allowing her back to the bull .Therefore every breeder in the paddock is a 'working girl' and a productive unit in the enterprise.

BRED in a NATURAL ENVIRONMENT

Although  Boogalgopal is in a 'ticky area', no cattle dip  or chemical has been used for 35 years and ticks have never been a problem . We adhere to the philosophy that 'natural is best' and the successful adaptation of each animal to the environment ensures their position in the herd. Minimal intervention with buffalo fly control is carried out in Summer depending on the severity of the fly population. A naturally HARDY CONSTITUTION is the favoured trait that we look for.

GOOD TEMPERAMENT

Emphasis on a' kind eye' and favorable temperament is paramount at Boogalgopal and unsuitable breeders find themselves homeless in a short space of time !

Breeding for a quiet nature over 35 years however has resulted in a herd that is a pleasure to work - without losing the ability  to walk along and work efficiently  through the yards.
